| "step from the road to the sea to the sky..." |
[Dec. 2nd, 2008|04:23 pm] |
To borrow Gramarye1971's articulation, I'm among those feeling like "December 2008 crept up behind them and coshed them on the back of the head," but much of it's my own darn fault, and the stuff that isn't can't be helped, so I will restock on dried squid tomorrow and brew buckets of tea all month, and all will eventually be well.
Plus, it seems churlish to wax anxious or fretful about anything when there's so much well with me already:
The new issue of flashquake is up, and it includes two of my poems: "The Sharpshooter Assembles A Relish Tray" and "A Stack of Cards."
I just got back from a week in the United Kingdom, where I got to meet up with aunty_marion at the Islington Slug and Lettuce, poked around Bletchley Park (which is in Buckinghamshire, and yes, there may eventually be TDiR fic from this), and meandered around Glasgow and Belfast with my sweetie. (And as with every trip, there were more people we would have liked to see than time to see them in, but we hope to be back (and for a longer holiday) in a couple of years...)
"Cthulhu" -- the BPAL scent, that is -- came to the rescue on our train ride from London to Glasgow, since I hadn't adequately anticipated the reek vs. sleep factor (i.e., sharing a very enclosed cabin after a long day sans showers).
Lots of anecdotal notes to self on differences between US and UK customs (what is(n't) comped in hotel rooms, etc.) and general climate (Belfast: lots of short skirts and high heeled boots in spite of the cold) and other things, which may show up here later either in fic or general natterings. I'll save it for January or later, though, since it's not like any of you lack things to read right now, and many of you are in the same boat as I am re: Stuff That Must Be Written Before Solstice. (All together now: EEK!) (And, deep breath: EEE!) (Who knows when they'll get written, but the plots, they are like the innards of intricately carved chesspieces...)
In Glasgow, there's a major road called Sauchiehall Street (pronounced "suckyhall"). It translates to "Way of the Willows."
In Glasgow's Museum of Transport, there's a Ford Anglia on display. There's a white owl perched inside...
After the Beautiful Young Man heard about Marion's plan to copyedit Book 7, he said, "You know how some dude edited Star Wars and got rid of Jar-Jar? Someone needs to phantom-edit HP and ditch Dobby."
Cedar, every time I saw the Odeon Leicester Square sign, I thought of you.
Cannot get "Together in Electric Dreams" out of my head. This is primarily from a late-night drink at the Stiff Kitten, where the DJ was playing what both the BYM and I think of as "80s comfort music" - which was all the more entertaining because two local, not-too-drunk lads periodically kept trying out breakdancing moves, with no one else in the bar paying them any mind. (We also stopped by the Morning Star, another pub where several tables of older people kept bursting into song. Some of it wasn't bad, but the multiple attempts at "New York, New York" were rather dire, and in spite of ordering a drink that came with its own plastic oar, I was not near tipsy enough to encourage them directly.)
There's more, but I need to tidy up and grab a quick bite before a meeting. Later, loves! *blows kisses and wafts warm studying/shopping/surviving/sketching/snoozing vibes at all y'all* |

| HikaGo recs. Vol. 2: Arboretum and Aja |
[Nov. 29th, 2008|09:41 pm] |
A Resolution of Territory, by Arboretum (has a sequel, A Pretty Good Year, but it's unavailable ATM) # Akira/Hikaru, NC-17, ~10K words.
Brilliant all the way through and very amusing. While being highly advanced in Go and renown in the official Go world, Hikaru finds that he's very much behind in the areas of life that interest 'normal' teenagers the most. Namely, sex. Hikaru's Life-Changing Discoveries and Steps on the Way are accompanied with lots and lots of Go and relationship counselling from the unwilling Waya. That's the kind of fic that gives you real pleasure while you're reading and puts a happy smile on your face when you remember it. Awesome!
Quote: They fight so loudly all the time eventually three different guests from three different countries all suggest imposing a restraining order on Hikaru. "No way," Hikaru and Touya say at the same time. Well, Hikaru says, "No way," and Touya stiffens up and says, "Absolutely not." Same thing, whatever.
Waterloo, by Aja (bookshop) # Akira/Hikaru, PG-13, 8000 words.
This story shows us a very interesting situation: Touya Jr. is on the brink of a victory which would better (much better) be a loss. One victory he's not ready for. Think of him and you'll know which victory it is. The way it's shown to us is, while not unheard of, interesting. Aja reveals necessary details one by one so that we construct the whole picture from them gradually. It's not a puzzle though, nor is it an annoying formal trick. Instead, it lets us connect to the characters and their emotions slowly and the more inevitably the more we learn. Wonderful piece, masterfully written and very intense. It will make you love the pairing and Go even more: how they work, what things mean between them, what the game is for them, what secrets they harbour and how those affect them, everything. Wonderful! |

| Empty Glasses |
[Nov. 28th, 2008|10:49 pm] |
Title: Empty Glasses Author: Lilith ( lilithilien) Fandom & Characters: Alles Was Zählt, Roman Word Count: 275 words Rating: Gen Disclaimer: If Roman and Deniz were mine, Roman wouldn't be nearly so miserable. A/N: I'm not sure where this angsty little character study came from. It does try to rationalise, somewhat, Roman's turn to the dark side, and it refers to events in ep. 529. Because what else would you do when you run out of hope?

| HP rec: Yearning, by Mandy (Snape/Harry, NC-17, EWE) |
[Nov. 28th, 2008|03:10 am] |
Yearning, by Mandy (geneticallydead) # Snape/Harry (Harry/Ginny mentioned), NC-17, novella, EWE. Summary: Harry buries Snape at Godric's Hollow. As he was in life, so he would be in death. Alone. But not forgotten.
When I saw this fic posted in the snape_potter comm, I immediately spammed my friends with squeeful emails. One would think that I should have read the fic first, right? But whether it was going to be wonderful or a disappointment, it was an event anyway because this is the Mandy who wrote Möbius 2.5 years ago, her first and only posted HP fic until now and the story that is still among my most favourite HP fics of any pairing, the riveting, highly original one (what? haven't read it? run, don't walk!).
So was Yearning a disappointment? Not at all! I'd even say "Of course not" but that would lead me along the twisted path of babbling about writing in general which I'm unwilling to do at the moment.
To avoid spoilers, let me put it like this: don't let the summary frighten you off. This is by no means a fluffy fic but it's not a tearjerker. It's serious and gritty or unpleasant sometimes -- don't forget who are the main characters here. Which main characters are written really, really wonderfully here. But what I like even more in this story is that it's full of small things that stick to your memory and that make you see very vivid images. To name a few: how Hermione nearly but not quite looks down to check if she leaks milk; how flakes of dead skin are suspended in the air after said skin is dried off with a towel; what grass under fingers feels like, etc. Lots and lots of them.
Really wonderful story! Go read if you missed it! |

[Nov. 26th, 2008|02:01 am] |
Title: Something Old, Something New Author: Lilith ( lilithilien) Fandom & Characters: Alles Was Zählt, Roman/Deniz Word Count: 1000 words Rating: Gen Disclaimer: I own absolutely nothing. A/N: This is a sequel to Something Borrowed, just another glimpse of Diana's wedding day, through Roman's eyes this time, when things were still hopeful. I'm not particularly happy with this piece, but it feels like I've pushed and pulled it enough, and now it's time to set it free and move on to something else!

| OMG this is bloody perfect!!! |
[Nov. 26th, 2008|03:39 am] |
Gmail now offers you to pick a skin, and I chose the one with foxes, Tea House. Because, you know, foxes :) I couldn't resist. It changes depending on the time of the day. The fox character in the bottom left corner does various things.
And OMFG, this is so, so perfect in the light of my new manga/anime love! Look!
( In the night, there are fox ghosts there that play Go! )
Aww, too cute for words. |
